Week 8 Origination

This week I missed class due to personal reasons so not very sure on what we covered about the exhibition but here is my answers for the quiz for “Laws of Simplicity” Law 7

Answer the following questions as succinctly as possible in your own words

1. When Maeda uses the “Feel, and feel for” principle, he is drawing on peoples
connection to a very personal experience: feelings. List 3 ways that would make
use of this principle to visitors of your exhibition.

·         You can use lighting to set different moods
·         Careful wording in the invitations can make it feel more personal instead of bulk mail out
·         Quiet calming music during the exhibition can also set the mood

2. What is animism? Why do you think the “Tamagocchi” craze of the ‘90s became
such a craze? How can you apply this to your exhibition?

Animism is allowing a life-less object qualities in which you are able have feelings for and connect with. I think the “Tamagocchi” faze was huge because all kids want a pet and this way they were able to have a virtual pet that didn’t cost parents an arm and a leg. Also you were able to care for the pet as you would a real one and watch it grow and then deal with its death when neglected. With our exhibits if I put my emotions and hard work and part of me in my work I think this would be noticed by the audience ann thus allow them to feel a connect to my work.

3. Name 2 products that you have purchased that gave you that feeling of “Aichaku”.
What feelings did those products evoke? Was it the feeling that sold the product
to you?
When I was younger I had a Furby. At first it was exciting because I could feed it and teach it words and to sing so it felt like I was raising it. However after a while I lost interest in it and returned it for a pokemon game. This game I felt I had more connection with because I could catch pokemon and raise them to be strong fighters and I had my own adventure to carry out with my companions. The good thing about the game was that not only I could have an emotional attachment to the pokemon I caught but I could connect the game to play with my neighbours and friends.

4. How do the references to emotion relate to the simplicity/complexity relationship
discussed in Law 5 – Differences

“More emotions are better than less” John explains how that if an object need more layers of design to make people “feel and feel for” the object it makes it a more wanted object. This however goes against the REDUCE law but if the buyer cannot connect or feel for the object or customise it to make it more personal the buyer will be more reluctant to purchase it.

Here is a video of the advertisement they used to have for the Furby. Watching it again I know why I wanted one to begin with. HAHA
